Sooner or later, every founder searching for a European clothing manufacturer arrives at the same crossroads. Italy, with its centuries of craft. Portugal, with its rising reputation and modern factories. Turkey, with its scale and speed. Each has built remarkable brands. Each suits a different kind of garment, budget and ambition.
Here is an honest comparison, written from inside an Italian atelier, but with respect for what each country does best.
Made in Italy: craft, fabric and the luxury standard
Italy’s strength is depth. Generations of tailors, pattern makers, embroiderers and finishers have kept artisanal knowledge alive, from couture ateliers to specialist workshops for knitwear, leather and tailoring. Italy is also home to some of the world’s most admired mills, which makes sourcing exceptional fabrics close at hand.
Best suited to: eveningwear, tailoring, corsetry, lingerie, silk and fine fabrics, hand finishes and garments where fit and construction are the product.
Consider: costs are typically higher than elsewhere in Europe, and the most skilled workshops are selective about the brands they take on. “Made in Italy” on a label carries real weight with luxury clients, and it is a promise the garment has to keep.
Made in Portugal: modern, reliable, strong in jersey and knit
Portugal has become one of Europe’s most popular choices for premium contemporary brands. Its factories, concentrated in the north, are known for reliability, good communication and particular strength in jersey, knitwear, cotton basics and casual premium categories.
Best suited to: elevated basics, knitwear, loungewear, jersey and contemporary ready-to-wear at a premium level.
Consider: for highly constructed or hand-finished luxury pieces, the specialist artisanal depth may be harder to find than in Italy.
Made in Turkey: scale, speed and competitive cost
Turkey has one of the largest and most capable textile industries in the region, with vertical supply chains, fast turnaround and very competitive pricing. It has long produced for major international brands.
Best suited to: brands that need volume, speed and cost efficiency, including denim, jersey and commercial ready-to-wear.
Consider: the larger factories are built for scale, so minimum order quantities can be higher, and the positioning of the label is different for a brand selling on luxury and heritage.

The decision that matters more than the country
Founders spend weeks comparing countries and almost no time on the thing that decides whether production in any of them succeeds: the technical foundation they arrive with.
A factory in any country can only make what it is given. Arrive with a vague sketch and you will be paying for corrections, wherever you are. Arrive with a precise tech pack and an engineered pattern, and the conversation changes completely: you can compare quotes fairly, move between manufacturers without losing your fit, and protect your brand’s consistency.
That is why we suggest a different order. Build the foundation first, then choose the country.
An Italian foundation that travels anywhere
Our Technical Foundation gives you a hand-sculpted, hand-drafted couture pattern and a Couture Tech Pack, developed together in the heritage Alta Moda moulage method. It is made in English and belongs to you entirely, so you can take it to a workshop in Italy, Portugal, Turkey or anywhere in the world.
Whichever country you choose, you start with an Italian couture standard. Discover the Technical Foundation.
