Why the specification decides the sample

When there is no specification, everyone guesses.

A tech pack answers the questions a drawing leaves open. The silhouette and its proportions — where the sleeve ends, where the hem falls. Where every seam and every closure sits, and the best placement for each. The fabric: weight, composition, whether it needs stretch, whether it needs lining. The finishes that make a garment read as luxury. And the construction itself — a French seam or a flat-felled seam, a baby-rolled hem or a faced one — whichever suits the silhouette, the weight of the fabric and how the garment is meant to sit.

Done right, it cuts rounds of sampling. Your Couture Patternmaker begins from your intent instead of a guess, so the first sample comes back close and every round after it is refinement, not investigation — less fabric, less time and less cost to reach the sample you approve.

It does not draft the pattern for you, though, and a Couture Patternmaker never follows one blindly. Much is only discovered in the making — during the patternmaking, and again in the first sample, once there is real fabric to work with. What a strong tech pack does is hand over a clear starting point: the silhouette settled, the construction lines placed, the early decisions already made. From there the tech pack and the pattern move together, each correcting the other, until both describe the same finished garment. Without that starting point the patternmaker still works at a high level — just slower, and with more room to drift from the design you set out to make.

Why ours are different

Not every tech pack is built the same.

You can have a tech pack made anywhere. A freelancer will turn one around from a stock template, or from a working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator. What that rarely comes with is a real understanding of how a garment is constructed — and never at the level a Couture Patternmaker brings to it. Ours are drawn by the same person who drafts our patterns on the mannequin, so every line on the page is a construction decision, not a value carried over from a template.

That is the whole point of doing it properly at the start: the highest technical foundation from the first day of your project, so your sampling rounds are shorter and you spend far less time and money getting the sample right. The wrong tech pack does the opposite — wrong samples, wasted budget, a production team working around gaps. It matters most for luxury, and it matters for any brand.

How long your tech pack runs depends on your design. Most styles come to 5–12 pages on average, depending on the style complexity; a design carrying artwork or heavy detailing runs longer, with pages added for the artwork itself. It is only ever as long as the garment needs.

You receive the finished PDF and its editable Adobe Illustrator source in one download, for your records and your production team. One to two revisions are included — a revision refines details within the same design; a new silhouette is a new style. The file belongs to your brand, usable with any manufacturer, for the life of the brand.

Your tech pack is specified by the same Couture Patternmaker who drafts our patterns on the mannequin. You get factory-grade specification with an atelier's understanding of how a garment is actually made — every value on the page is a decision, not a default.

Where a pattern begins

A tech pack is what a pattern is built from.

Order the tech pack on its own, or take both together as the Technical Foundation and have the same Couture Patternmaker develop the tech pack and the pattern in tandem. Working both at once, the patternmaker catches things while drafting that a separate tech-pack author would not — a better seam for the cloth, a closure moved a centimetre, a construction method that suits the silhouette — and updates your tech pack as they go. The pattern informs the tech pack, the tech pack informs the pattern; developed together, each one comes out stronger.

Timelines are estimates and shift with the atelier's schedule and the time of year — the atelier closes for part of August. Revisions requested after you review the file add to the schedule.

Before you order

A few things worth knowing.

Do I need to send anything before I order?

No. You order at the fixed price, then a short intake form collects your design, sizing and fabric. There is no pre-purchase review and no call.

What do I need to have ready?

A sketch, a reference, a photograph or a sample; your sizing; any colourways. Where you are unsure — fabric especially — write “unknown” and we suggest the options.

What counts as one style?

One garment. A two-piece set — a top and a bottom, say — is two tech packs, one for each garment, each built and priced on its own.

What is the turnaround?

About 7–10 business days per style, from your completed intake. It varies with the atelier's schedule and the time of year.

How many pages is a tech pack?

5–12 pages on average, depending on the style complexity — set by the garment. It is complete when a factory can build from it without a follow-up question — not when it reaches a page count.

Can I take it to my own factory?

Yes. You own the file and its editable source, and can produce it anywhere.

What if something needs changing?

One to two revisions are included in the price. A revision adjusts details within the same design; further rounds are quoted separately, and a new silhouette is a new style.

Do you also make the pattern, samples and production?

Yes. Add the Couture Pattern as the Technical Foundation, and — once it is complete and we have confirmed the project is a mutual fit — the same atelier can take the style on into sampling and production.

Will you sign an NDA?

Yes. Send us yours before you share a sketch and we will sign it.
