With the industrial revolution, when production became "serial," the first technical data sheets emerged, allowing workers to create the same product with uniform standards.
In the post-war period, ready-to-wear required increasingly accurate technical documentation. Since the 1980s, with the internationalization of production between the USA and Asia, clear and universal documents have become increasingly important to ensure proper communication between designers, product developers, pattern makers, and ateliers or factories.
This is how the idea of the tech pack (technical package) was born: a detailed technical document that operates as a “blue print” for any given fashion design. A tech pack fully describes all the specifications necessary for drafting a first pattern and sample development and production of a garment. Showing front and back technical drawings and their construction lines, precise silhouettes and drape, details like seams and finishes, spec measurements, sewing notes and instructions, colorways, fabrications, notoins & trims, the comprehensive full list of the bill of materials, etc. are what make up an accurate tech pack; officially defining the exact fit and quality of your design.
