In the beginning, production was artisanal.
With the industrial revolution, when production became "serial," the first technical data sheets emerged, allowing workers to create the same product with uniform standards.
In the post-war period, ready-to-wear required increasingly accurate technical documentation. Since the 1980s, with the internationalization of production between the USA and Asia, clear and universal documents have become increasingly important to ensure proper communication between designers, product developers, pattern makers, and ateliers or factories.
This is how the idea of the tech pack (technical package) was born: a detailed technical document that operates as a “blue print” for any given fashion design. A tech pack fully describes all the specifications necessary for drafting a first pattern and sample development and production of a garment. Showing front and back technical drawings and their construction lines, precise silhouettes and drape, details like seams and finishes, spec measurements, sewing notes and instructions, colorways, fabrications, notoins & trims, the comprehensive full list of the bill of materials, etc. are what make up an accurate tech pack; officially defining the exact fit and quality of your design.
A successful tech pack accurately communicates your exact creative design, translated into technical terms, to your samplemaker with not a single detail missed or left to be interpreted by a production team which usually leads to error. Your tech pack needs to communicate and translate your design both creatively but most importantly technically and if you don’t have. the technical expertise to do it yourself you should definitly hire the right technical designer to make your tech pack for you.
This leads me to my next point, not all tech packs are created equally because many tech packs are made by non-designers who don’t understand garment construction or a hopeful aspiring designer who has a great creative idea but doesn’t yet understand garment construction from a technical level.
The truth is, without a properly made expert tech pack from a technical designer who understands garment construction, you will most certainly receive inaccurate samples that take a lifetime and way more time and money in sample development than you need to and you don’t bring your design to life at the optimum level. This rings true especially for those who wish to enter the accessible luxury to luxury markets. A second truth is, by submitting sub-par tech packs, your sample maker or factory will get frustrated with you or your brand and might not want to help your brand scale as they need precise and organized documenation from the beginning and anthing less than that there’s a high change they won’t take your brand very seriously and you’ll have to jump factory to factory, which won’t help your brand actually scale.
Simplu put, by having a precise and well done tech pack from the get go, you will minimize the risk of getting a less-than-perfect final sample and future production errors. Your tech pack should effectively represent a bridge between design and production, between the creative mind and the samplemaker and atelier or factory's work, enabling clear, digital communication.
